On Oct. 8, 2023, Beaverlodge RCMP received a call from EMS stating they were transporting a male who was injured under suspicious circumstances in Horse Lake First Nation. The victim, a 47-year-old resident of Horse Lake First Nation, was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Major Crimes Unit took carriage of the investigation, in partnership with Beaverlodge RCMP, Western Alberta District General Investigation Section and the Grande Prairie Forensic Identification Unit.

As a result of the investigation, Carmon Ferguson (36), a resident of Horse Lake First Nation, was charged with second-degree murder.

Ferguson was brought before a justice of the peace where he was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is on Oct. 16, 2023, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie.
