This past weekend, Grande Prairie RCMP Traffic Unit conducted an impaired driving initiative, in partnership with City of Grande Prairie Municipal Enforcement, and representatives from MADD.

Between the dates of July 12 – 14, 2019, Grande Prairie RCMP utilized the Mobile Breath Test Unit and conducted multiple checkstops throughout the city. The Mobile Breath Test Unit was set up at four separate locations during these dates. The initiative was successful, as police were able to check a significant number of motorists.

During the three day initiative, 1519 drivers were checked and provided roadside breath samples in accordance with the new Mandatory Alcohol Screening laws.

This impaired driving initiative yielded the following results:

  • 10 people were arrested and charged with criminal impaired driving
  • 15 people were issued provincial sanctions, such as a 24 hour driving suspension
  • 3 people were screened for possible drug impaired driving
  • 30 provincial violation tickets were issued
  • 2 other criminal code charges were laid

RCMP consider this initiative to be highly successful, as numerous impaired drivers were removed from city streets. In addition, the mobile Checkstop provided an opportunity to educate drivers about Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS). As MAS is relatively new in Alberta, the overall reception from the public was positive.

Grande Prairie RCMP is committed to community safety and will continue working towards reducing crime through initiatives such as this
