According to the latest report by the Government of Alberta, Grande Prairie had the highest rate of fentanyl deaths in the province in 2019.

Grande Prairie is also the only large municipality that did not have a noticeable decrease in the rate of fentanyl poisoning deaths from 2018 to 2019.

Both Calgary and Edmonton had more deaths, at 199 and 157. Grande Prairie came in third at 24. When calculated at a rate of deaths per 100,000 people, Grande Prairie is at 32.5, with Calgary and Edmonton at less than half that rate.

On the positive side, the 2019 annual provincial rate of fentanyl poisoning deaths is 23 per cent lower than the rate in 2018, and 10 per cent lower than the rate in 2017.

Accidental opioid poisoning has also gone down, with 603 deaths in 2019, and 769 in 2018.

On average, just under 2 individuals die every day in Alberta as a result of an apparent accidental opioid poisoning.
