In today’s COVID-19 update, Dr. Hinshaw reported 6961 recoveries and 512 active cases.

Of about 9000 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, there have been 46 new cases identified. There are 39 people in hospital with 6 of these in the ICU. There have been no new deaths.

One more person has recovered in Grande Prairie, leaving just one active case and 17 recoveries. There have been no new cases identified in the City or County.

Dr. Hinshaw addressed those who are wondering why active cases are going up and not down. There are currently about 173 more active cases than there were two weeks ago. An increase in cases was expected as we moved to stage two, with people going out and interacting more. She said they continue to monitor the situation closely.

So far, hospitalization rates have remained steady and have gone down over the last two weeks. It is also positive that most of our active cases are from a known source, which helps us to stop spread faster. There are also only 26 active cases in continuing care facilities and 708 recoveries. There also has not been significant transmission related to outdoor gatherings.

On the other hand, they are continuing to identify cases in all age groups, and Edmonton now has nearly as many cases as Calgary. The largest portion of cases have moved to workplaces and funerals. From two recent funerals 24 new cases were identified.

Dr. Hinshaw reminds Albertans that the virus can spread easily, especially without distancing or masks when distancing is not possible. Indoor gatherings, including parties, have the highest risk of spread. Dr. Hinshaw says workplaces need to consider how they can make sure distancing and other protocols are firmly embedded in how they run. Common high-touch surfaces have likely been the cause of cases spreading in workplaces, so cleaning those is essential.

Dr. Hinshaw reminds everyone again that the virus is still here and not going anywhere. She says we need to continue to operate as if we could have the virus and could spread it; that it is not the time to become complacent.

She acknowledges that by now, Albertans can probably recite here advice in their sleep. She says again, stay two metres apart, wear masks if you can’t, and get tested and stay home if you’re feeling ill. We remain each other's best defense. She says to keep reminding each other of public health orders. Following public guidelines means we are being courteous and thinking of others, not being afraid.
