Health Minister Tyler Shandro introduced Bill 30 to the legislature on Monday afternoon.

Known as the Health Statutes Amendment Act, the bill would introduce a number of steps to "modernize" the province's healthcare system, through a number of new policies and amendments.

A few of the highlighted policies include an increased number of public members on Health Professional Regulatory College councils, more options of physicians in terms of compensation and time with patients, and an amendment to the COVID-19 quarantine requirements that would see all travelers to Alberta quarantined for 14 days rather than just those returning.

The bill will also take steps to encourage more private chartered surgical facilities to open in the province by streamlining the review and approval process.

Minister Shandro says this isn't an effort to privatize the healthcare system.

"This isn't just about the chartered surgical facilities, this is also about us investing in the publicly owned facilities for them to also have the capacity so we can meet our commitment to Albertans that we are going to ensure that even with COVID, we are going to by 2023 make sure the surgeries people receive in this province are within the clinically appropriate wait times."

Another of the highlighted acts under Bill 30 is the "Regional Health Authorities Amendment Act," that would clarify the role of AHS as Alberta's single health authority, with Covenant Health described as a "strategic partner and the largest provider of faith-based health-care services."
