In today’s daily COVID-19 update, Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported 5,317 recoveries, 1,073 active cases in the provinces.

Currently, 62 people are in the hospital with nine of these in the ICU.

Of 4,505 tests processed in the last 24 hours, there were 58 cases identified

This week Alberta Health Services (AHS) started a program for asymptomatic testing in Calgary. This resulted in 50 cases being identified since Monday. These people had reported no symptoms, but there is no information yet on whether they developed symptoms or are close contacts or had no known source. So far the testing is helping to identify cases. As they investigate more, more information will be shared.

There have been four new deaths, all in continuing care facilities in the Calgary Zone. The total is now at 125.

Dr. Hinshaw says it’s important to remember that the virus still poses a risk, particularly to elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. She says that no Albertan is expendable.

The deadline for businesses that are re-opening to post the relaunch considerations template has been extended to 14 days from opening. Businesses who have been open during the shut-down can post the template if they choose. The template is available at Alberta Biz Connect

Dr. Hinshaw provided some comments about going outdoors and traveling this long weekend.

She reminded Albertans about limiting non-essential travel outside the province and make sure to respect the health of small communities they travel. This includes making minimal stops along the way and bringing your own food.

Effective today, the outdoor mass gathering limit is being raised to 50 if everyone from different households can stay at least two metres apart and practices proper hygeine. Participants are encouraged not to share food or drink. Dr. Hinshaw says to hold off on any gathering if you are uncertain you can follow public health orders and guidelines. Indoor gathering limits are still at 15.

She says to be sure to follow restrictions on playground where they apply. Where it is not restricted by the municipality, playgrounds are okay to use.

Dr. Hinshaw asks Albertans to download the AB trace together app and use it when you go out and invite people over.

They will be scaling down the frequency of daily updates next week. Updates will happen Tuesday and Thursday next week, and Monday, Wednesday and Friday the week after. If something significant happens, they will schedule a media availability.
