We welcome everyone to gather with us on Sunday, September 30 for Orange Shirt Day to continue the dialogue on the effects of the residential school system and moving forward as a community.
The event takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Centre 2000.
‘Past, Present, Future’ is the theme of the event, which will feature three intergenerational speakers. Each will speak on their personal experiences of the impacts of residential schools, healing and reconciliation. A full list of speakers will be announced at a later date.
Other features at the event include student displays from each of our local school districts, a historical trivia game for families with prizes, a booth from the Grande Prairie Public Library showcasing Indigenous authors and signing people up for free library memberships and a free community BBQ.
This is the third year Orange Shirt Day is being hosted in Grande Prairie. It was initiated here in 2016 as part of the Canada-wide movement inspired by Phyllis Webstad.
Everyone in the community is welcome to join, and the event is free for all.
Orange Shirt Day takes places as part of Alberta Culture Days and is made possible by the City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services.
