In the midst of disaster following the eruption of a volcano in the Philippines, one group is working to care for the physical and spiritual needs of those suffering in evacuation centres.

The eruption of the Taal Volcano has left town and cities in its vicinity in lockdown. Many have fled to evacuation centres and many have become ill due to the heavily congested air contaminated by ash from the volcano's eruption.

The work of Christian non-profit Operation Blessing in assisting with medical needs through their visits to evacuation centres, however, is shining God's light and love to victims of the disaster, CBN News reports.

In fact, Operation Blessing has led to whole families receiving Christ—and hope in their suffering.

Remedios Sacdalan was sad to see herself and her whole family in an evacuation centre after the disaster. She has been caring for her nephews and nieces through the ordeal and their suffering has been impactful on her.

Sacdalan says all 16 members of their family are staying in one classroom.

Before they decided to evacuate, Sacdalan says their family slept outside their houses.

"We were frightened because the tremors were strong and frequent," she says.

Cracks began to show in the walls of their house from the tremors and ground fissures were visible after the eruption of Taal in their town, Calaca. After authorities saw these damages, a total lockdown was declared for the town.

"I pray to God for mercies, for the eruption to stop, and other people will not experience what we are going through," says Sacdalan.

She has struggled seeing one of her nieces' sons suffering from illness.

"The children get sick. Our parents are old and also sick. What's worse is we don't know how long this will last," Sacdalan says.

She adds that the future is full of uncertainties, but with help from Operation Blessing, the family has new hope.

When Operation Blessing visited their evacuation centre to offer medical assistance, they also shared the message of salvation through Jesus with Sacdalan and her family.

Together, Sacdalan and her relatives chose to follow Jesus that day.

The family is extremely grateful for the medical and spiritual help they received from Operation Blessing.

The organization continues to work, assisting victims suffering as a result of the disaster.
