Today (Jan. 5), Alberta reported 843 new cases of COVID-19 from 10,301 tests for a positivity rate of 8.2%. 

Right now, 919 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, with 140 of these in intensive care. In the North Zone, the number is 63 with five in intensive care.  

There are now 91,799 recovered cases in the province. 

In the last 24 hours, 26 more COVID-related deaths were reported in Alberta. Of these, one each was in the City and County of Grande Prairie. The death in Grande Prairie occured on Sunday, Jan. 3, and was a man in his 70s with preexisting condition(s), connected to the outbreak at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. In the County, it was a man in his 70s with preexisting condition(s), who passed away yesterday. 

In Grande Prairie, there are 121 active cases with 709 recoveries and nine total deaths. In the County of Grande Prairie, 36 cases are active, with 216 recoveries and two deaths.

Dr. Hinshaw says that our provincial daily cases numbers are lower because of less fewer tests being completed, and still need to decrease. She says that our health care system still under strain. She reminds Albertans to keep following public health orders.
