The NHL is hoping to move to Phase 2 of its return-to-play protocol, including the opening of practice facilities and allowing small group workouts, early next month.

The league, which was forced to pause its season March 12 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, released a 22-page memo detailing the plan Monday.

The document stresses there's no exact date for the start of Phase 2 or a timetable for how long it will last.

The small group workouts must not exceed six skaters and no coaches or staff will have any involvement for the on-ice work. Participation in these groups will not be mandatory and players may take part on a voluntary basis.

All players and team staff will be administered a COVID-19 test two days prior to the beginning of Phase 2 and be expected to monitor themselves for symptoms.

Other measures include mandatory face coverings, other than when players are exercising or on the ice.
