Local and area residents have increased access to mental health services with the recruitment of another psychiatrist for the city.

Dr. Anne-Marie Grew is based out of the addiction and mental health offices in the Aberdeen Centre, and is also providing care at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

“The addition of another psychiatrist will improve access to mental health services for Grande Prairie and Peace Country residents,” says Nicholas Milliken, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction. “Alberta’s government is committed to recruiting and retaining healthcare workers in northern Alberta and we are thrilled to have Dr. Grew joining our team of mental health professionals.”

“Along with AHS and the community, the Government of Alberta is dedicated to improving mental health services in Grande Prairie,” adds Tracy Allard, MLA for Grande Prairie. “Welcoming Dr. Grew to Grande Prairie is an important part of that work.”

Grande Prairie now has eight psychiatrists, two of whom are child/adolescent psychiatrists.

Dr. Grew is originally from Northern Ireland, and moved to Alberta from Scotland. She received her medical training in Scotland at the University of Aberdeen. As a physician with the National Health Service (NHS) in the U.K., Dr. Grew did her residency in locations throughout Scotland, including Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Fife. She specializes in general adult psychiatry.

Dr. Grew and her family now reside in Grande Prairie, where they are enjoying their new love of hockey and looking forward to taking up cross-country skiing. She is happy to be part of her new community, at home and at work. “Mental health continues to be at the forefront of medicine and cultural awareness here in Alberta and I’m looking forward to continuing the good work in the community that my colleagues have been doing,” she says.
