Today Alberta is reporting 70 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the running total to 5,963. Of these, 3,552 have recovered.

No new cases have been confirmed in the City or County of Grande Prairie, and one person in the City has recovered.

The total deaths are at 112, with six new being reported.

There have been 632 cases at continuing care facilities.

Meat Packing Facilities:

  • Cargil has 946 with 798 recovered
  • JBS has 566 with 434 recovered
  • Harmony Beef has 38 with 12 recovered

Both Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) have been visiting the outbreak sites regularly. These meat facilities have implemented approved safety protocols that are tailored to each place. These controls include requiring PPE, temperature checks at the start of shifts, extra cleaning, staggering shifts and breaks, and increasing distance between employees.

Dr. Hinshaw reports she has received assurance from AHS that safety controls are in place.

AHS has conducted three inspections at Cargill, four at JBS and two at Harmony. OHS is investigating both Cargill and JBS. These will take some time as they are extensive investigations.

As we look to starting phase one of the relaunch, AHS is watching our indicators as to when this can happen. This includes looking at hospitalization and ICU rates and numbers of new cases. Right now our hospitalization numbers are below the highwater mark with 82 in hospital and 19 in the ICU. Our numbers of daily new cases have also been lower than last week.

The indicators will inform the recommendation Dr. Hinshaw and her team give to the Emergency Management Cabinet Committee on when we can begin phase one.
