Murray was described by a teammate as someone who played every shift on the ice as if it were his last. “He was never known to take off a shift and never seemed to need to.” (Neil Isnor). According to Murray his work ethic and love of hockey was the product of family values. A dugout adjacent to their farm home near Wembley Alberta was the “rink” where Murray, along with three brothers played with and against each other. Their father, Don was their coach – Mother Bev was their devoted fan and cheer leader. After playing through mite, peewee and midget hockey in Wembley and Grande Prairie, Murray played five  years of Junior A hockey with the Grande Prairie North Stars. As a North Star he established more recognition and honours than any player before or since - most goals in a single season, most points as a North Star and most assists. At Red Deer College Murray’s coach was Mike Babcock, presently head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Bill Peters, present head coach of the Calgary Flames, was a teammate.

Following graduation with a diploma  in Business Murray returned to Grande Prairie. He continued to play senior hockey in the Central Peace Senior Hockey League but his priorities shifted. It was family first then business, coaching, and serving on numerous hockey related boards and committees to foster the development of young people through hockey. His most recent contribution to hockey at home was to provide leadership toward the rescue of Grande Prairie’s” Junior A Storm who play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

On the 15th anniversary of the Grande Prairie Legends Project Murray Toews is the first recipient of The Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Lifetime Achievement award is given to recognize the valuable and consistent participation of individuals to the growth and benefits of hockey to the City of Grande Prairie and its citizens.
The screening and selection process will consider an individual’s hockey history including roles such as player – coach – referee and builder that the candidate may have assumed. Beyond noteworthy involvement in these roles, efforts will be made to identify and select candidates who demonstrate a level of commitment to hockey that reflects greater than ordinary dedication to and passion for the game and a determination to improve the general quality of hockey as a sport.
