Grande Prairie City Council voted on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to pass a bylaw for mandatory masking if the City hits a certain “trigger point.”

The new bylaw makes masks mandatory in indoor public areas and public vehicles when case numbers in the City and County combined reach 100 or there’s a relaunch status change by either municipality to Enhanced status as per the Government of Alberta.

The City has allowed for some exceptions, including if a physical barrier is present. It won’t apply to schools, hospitals, or other health care facilities as they fall under provincial authority. Buildings only accessible to employees such as private offices and boardrooms will also be exempt.

Masks won’t be required anymore if cases go below the trigger for 14 consecutive days.

The bylaw is effective until Jan. 1, 2021, unless otherwise directed by Council.
