The woman that voiced Ariel over 30 years ago is opening up about the vital role her Christian faith has played in the course of her career and life.

"It's just truly been an incredible faith walk," says Jodi Benson during an interview with FaithWire. "Obviously, God knew that He had my career lined up 10,000 steps ahead of me."

Benson recently released a biography titled Part of My World: What I’ve Learned from The Little Mermaid about Love, Faith, and Finding My Voice. In it, Benson shares details about her faith in God, as well as what it was like working as the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid

"It's been life-changing over the last 35-plus years now, being part of this film and creating this character. It's been an unbelievable journey."

The film first hit the theatres in 1989 and continues to be popular today.

From Head Knowledge to Heart Knowledge

During the video interview, Benson shared she grew up going to church and knew about God. However, it wasn't more than that to her until she became an adult.

"When I met my husband while I was 18, he's like, 'You know you can have that personal relationship,' and I knew that I had that, so it was just the realization of, it isn't a religion. It really is this ongoing, 24-seven relationship that I can call out and talk to any time of the day or night."

She reveals that once this became a truth in her life, God became her everything.

"He's in control, and I'm not, and that's the key," says Benson. "He's not only God of my life, but He's director, He's casting director, He's Producer, He's everything. I just need to walk in the room. I just need to do my best and throw it out there and let it go."

Benson hopes people will be encouraged to ask big questions as they read her new book.

"Maybe they'd read a story, and it would make them think about something they've never thought about before. Whether it's thinking about, 'Is there a higher power?' 'What does that look like?' 'Am I all that there is?'"

Benson has been married for almost 40 years to her husband Ray and they have two children together.
