An American Idol contestant put God front and centre during a recent performance on the popular television show.

21-year-old Abi Carter, who comes from what she says is a very religious household of seven, performed Hillsong UNITED's 'Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)' in a special episode live from Hawaii.

Fans in the crowd raised their arms in praise, while judges were almost brought to tears.

"I am shaking for you," said guest judge Tori Kelly. "I was rooting for you so hard. I feel a performance is all about creating moments and you did exactly that."

“When you saw everybody’s hand from here to there go up, that means they were in the palm of your hand," said Lionel Ritchie after the performance.

Katy Perry mirrored that saying Abi is one of her favourite contestants.

"I just think you are so gifted,” said Perry.

Carter made the Top 24 after singing Cher's 'If I Could Turn Back Time' while battling bronchitis.

The next episode of American Idol will air this Sunday.
