Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says how high or how low the death toll in Alberta reaches because of COVID-19 is largely up to us.

He made projections public during a televised address Tuesday, April 7, saying the number of dead from the disease could be as low as 400 or as much as 6,600 in a worst case scenario over the next few months.

Kenney says the numbers show we could hit the peak of the virus around the middle of May.

He says the Province will continue to enforce restrictions on public gatherings to no more than 15 people and the closure of non-essential businesses until at least the end of April.

He says rules around social distancing will likely be in place until the end of May.

The Premier says without those orders the number of cases would balloon to 1.6 million infections and as many as 32,000 deaths, collapsing our health care system.

Kenney also says plans to kick-start the economy will be phased in, while trying to prevent a second wave of COVID-19.

Kenney says unemployment in Alberta could be as high as 25 per cent, and could push higher before the pandemic comes to an end.

The Premier also warned the Province will likely see the deficit triple from $7 billion to $21 billion over the next year.
