We are in the middle of National Emergency Preparedeness week (May 3rd to 9th) and the question asked every year is: Is your family ready for an emergency?

We have all been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and how that has changed our lives, but that doesn't mean we can let our guard down against other disasters and emergencies. In Central Alberta, there is always the possibility of extended power outages, tornados, or flooding.

Part of being prepared is making a 72-hour emergency kit for you and your family.

Your kit should include:

  • a first aid kit
  • a radio (with extra batteries)
  • drinking water
  • a multipurpose jack-knife
  • a flashlight (with extra batteries)
  • blankets or sleeping bags
  • non-perishable food items including canned goods (with can opener)
  • candles (with matches)
  • a whistle
  • extra clothing for all family members
  • copies of your insurance forms

Don't forget to also pack any regular medicine that you may be taking and also cash, as banking machines may not be working.

“There are simple steps each of us can take to better prepare ourselves and our loved ones.

Know the risks – Find out more about your community’s emergency plans by contacting your local municipal office. Know these risks and the best way to respond to them.

Make a plan – An emergency plan will help you cope with the stress of a disaster. Make a plan for what your family will do and who they will contact during an emergency.

Build a kit – In an emergency, you and your family should be prepared for a minimum of 72 hours. Build your kit to suit your particular needs with enough non-perishable food, water, medicines, warm clothes and comfort items for all family members.
