The International Committee selection team for the Arctic Winter Games 2022 is touring Grande Prairie on Monday, January 14 as part of the bid adjudication process.

The tour is an opportunity to show off the extraordinary places of sport and culture in our community and demonstrate our commitment to creating an exceptional experience for athletes, visitors and our residents.

Members of the community are invited to come show their support for the bid at a trade show style event taking place on the 2nd floor of the Eastlink Centre Fieldhouse between 3:00 p.m. -5:30 p.m. The event features information booths from various community groups, sport demonstrations and DJ services from FLIP Entertainment. Attendees will receive free admission to all the dry-land services in the Eastlink Centre. Youth are especially encouraged to attend.

The Arctic Winter Games are a high profile, international circumpolar sport competition for northern and arctic athletes from Canada, the United States, Russia, Greenland and northern Scandinavian countries. Communities who host welcome over 2000 participants, over 500 additional visitors such as parents, officials and coaches, and many more spectators. Hosting such a large-scale event would have a significant economic, social and cultural impact in Grande Prairie while allowing us to showcase our heritage and community on the international stage.

The Arctic Winter Games provide an opportunity to strengthen sport development in the participants’ jurisdictions, to promote the benefits of sport, to build partnerships, and to promote culture and values. The Games provide an opportunity for the developing athlete to compete in friendly competition while sharing cultural values from northern regions around the world. The bid committee extends their gratitude in advance to the International Committee for taking the time to tour our community, and to our residents for helping make the showcase a success. A host city for the games will be selected by the end of February.
