The Community Advisory Board on Housing and Homelessness (CABH) is asking rental property owners and managers for help during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have recognized the need for affordable housing options for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

There are currently over 50 people working with Grande Prairie service providers, looking for permanent rental housing. These persons are participants in a program called Housing First, in operation in the City since 2009.

Housing First participants have a history of homelessness or housing instability and often face housing barriers such as low income. Participants in the program include families, single adults, couples, youth and seniors working towards housing and personal stability. Bachelor and 1-bedroom units, with a rental rate of $900 or less per month are particularly valuable for the program. However, some larger units that are likely in a higher price range are also needed.

Rental property owners and managers can benefit from partnering with Housing First programs to provide participants with housing options. Housing First programs offer rental subsidies to ensure that participants can pay their rent each month. Support staff complete housing check-ins regularly with participants and connect directly with property managers to ensure that the tenancy is progressing well. A newly implemented housing placement committee provides additional insight and support on the best participant-rental unit match to increase opportunities for success.

Any rental property owner or manager is welcome to contact the City’s Landlord-Tenant Advisor, Valerie Thiessen at 780-830-8948 or vthiessen@cityofgp.com for further information about this opportunity.
