There have been four more deaths from COVID-19 including one person at the Cargill plant north of High River.

Alberta has now had 59 deaths.

Dr..Deena Hinshaw says there's a number of reasons the outbreak at Cargill has grown so much.

"There are 360 cases in workers from that plant related to that outbreak, but there has also been spread in the community beyond these workers with 484 total cases linked to that outbreak," Dr. Hinshaw says. "Not all of these cases are people who work at that plant. Many of these cases live in surrounding communities, such as Calgary. Many of the cases identified in the Calgary Zone over the weekend were linked to this broader outbreak".

She says some of the people were working in long term care who were unable to self isolate in large households, passing on the virus to others who worked at the Cargill plant.

Dr. Hinshaw says there a dedicated team in place working to reduce the spread of the virus, with particular attention on households where there may be the resources or the space for self-isolation.

She says many of the cases that are just now being diagnosed were exposed up to two weeks ago before control measures were put in place, so she expects to see more cases in the coming days.

There are also outbreak control measures in place at the JBS Foods plant in Brooks where 67 cases have been diagnosed.

There were 105 new cases in Alberta, a decrease from the previous day despite expanded testing.

The provincial total number of cases is 2,908 with 1,230 recovered.

Over 100,000 people have been tested in Alberta.
