The Grande Prairie Salvation Army just got back from a 3 week deployment from Fort Vermilion with their Community Response unit. In late April, the town was forced to evacuate following major flooding in the region. The flooding caused all 750 people in the community to leave their homes and evacuate. Captain Peter Kim with the Salvation Army in Grande Prairie says his crews were ready to respond.

"We were called on the 2nd of May to assist the flood victims of Fort Vermilion as they re enter after the ice jam. We started feeding breakfest, lunch and supper for the evacuees and also to the volunteers who were coming to help for the flood relief efforts."

The GP Salvation Army received their newly renovated food truck just in time to help Fort Vermilion residents. They prepared 4,260 meals in the three weeks that they were there. Kim said the town was under a boil water advisory and the sefl conainted kitchen had their own water to use.

All the volunteers were made up of five people in each team, three teams made the trip and they served three meals a day.

The new canteen truck will be used to not only help the people of the Peace Region and the surrounding area but also for the Street Feeding Ministry which will be locally in Grande Prairie to help feed the homeless.

"We're going to use it in a dual sense, of emergency disaster services and local services"
