The Grande Prairie Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is underway in the city.

The annual fundraising event is crucial to helping people in need including toy hampers, the food bank, hot meals, summer camps, clothing, counselling and many other services.

As of Wednesday, November 29th the fundraising total sits at $260,000 towards the $650,000 goal.

Captain Peter Kim says that due to the rising need in our community they estimate that 1 in 5 are using the food bank and community kitchen.

If you have a couple of hours to spare, the Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers for the kettles in the city.

"If someone did a two-hour shift, they could potentially be raising enough money for helping out a family or two", says Captain Kim.
