On Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2023, Grande Prairie RCMP were conducting pro-active patrols in the Morgan Meadows area when a vehicle was observed driving at a high rate of speed. Police pulled the vehicle over and, while conducting their investigation, found the driver and passenger in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun, pepper spray and bear spray.

Further investigation led police to obtain and execute a search warrant for a residence in Grande Prairie, associated to the passenger. As a result of the search warrant, the following items were seized:

  • 12 firearms;
  • 3 BB guns;
  • Ammunition; and
  • Pepper and Bear spray.

As a result of the investigation, a 15-year-old male youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon;
  • Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
  • Possession of a weapon at an unauthorized place;
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized; and
  • Possession of a restricted firearm, with ammunition, without a licence.

Furthermore, Marcus LAKE (22), a resident of Grande Prairie, was charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
  • Possession of a weapon at an unauthorized place;
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Possession of a restricted firearm, with ammunition, without a licence; and
  • Unsafe storage of firearms.

Lake and the youth were brought before a justice of the peace who released them on conditions. The youth is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie on Jan. 8, 2024 and Lake is scheduled to appear at the same courthouse on Jan. 24, 2024.
