The City of Grande Prairie is proud to celebrate Canada Day across the community with a wide variety of events planned for 2020, including a double fireworks display and reverse parade.

All residents are encouraged to join in the fun activities and show their Canadian pride by taking part in the following free activities and contests:

Canada Day Door and Balcony Decorating Contest

Households are invited to spread Canadian spirit by joining the Canada Day decorating contest and entering to win a grand prize Canada Day Barbecue Package. To enter to win, residents can submit photos of their Canada Day inspired doors and balconies to programming@cityofgp.com. Participants are also welcome to share their decorated door or balcony by uploading a photo to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #CityofGPCanadaDay.

The contest runs until 11:59 p.m. on June 28th with a random winner being drawn and contacted on June 29.

Grande Prairie Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

The City and Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association have teamed up to provide residents with a City-wide outdoor scavenger hunt through an interactive scavenger hunt app. Residents can join in on the fun by downloading the game app, completing missions and getting the chance to win prizes. The scavenger hunt starts June 15 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on June 28. More details on how to participate are available at cityofgp.com/CanadaDay.

Canadian Checklist

The City has rounded up a list of items that are commonly found in Canadian households to create a fun, indoor activity to see how much Canadian memorabilia all of our residents have around their homes! Download the checklist at cityofgp.com/CanadaDay, see what you can find in your home, and see how many points you can score! Submit your final score by uploading a picture to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #CityofGPCanadaDay.

Reverse Parade and Car Show

In partnership with the Grande Prairie DownTown Association, a reverse parade is being hosted along 100 Avenue, from Resources Road to 102 Street. A car show will also be on display, brought to you in partnership with the Grande Prairie Tourism Association. Residents are invited to drive down 100 Avenue on July 1 from 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. to view a festively decorated downtown core and vintage vehicles to celebrate the day. Viewing is only permitted from within the inside of vehicles.

Double Fireworks Display

Grande Prairie’s traditional fireworks display continues this year, with a new twist. The fireworks are now being held on Canada Day, July 1, at approximately 11:45 p.m., and will be displayed in two locations: Muskoseepi Park and the CKC east football field, next to St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Residents are encouraged to watch fireworks that are closest to them and remain in their vehicles to view the displays as physical distancing and gathering restrictions issued by the Government of Alberta remain in effect.
