The province has added 639 new cases of COVID-19 today (Jan. 11), from 9,838 tests completed.  

Right now, 13,917 cases are active in the province. With 815 more people recovering, the recovered total has reached 96,867. 

There’s 811 people in the hospital with the virus, with 130 of these in intensive care. This is 17 more than reported yesterday, and two more ICU admissions. In the North Zone, there’s 64 people in the hospital with seven of these admitted to intensive care. 

Alberta has reported 23 more COVID-related deaths, for a total of 1,307 since the start of the pandemic.  

Alberta had an R value, or reproduction number, of 0.90 (0.87-0.92) from Jan. 4-10. The Edmonton Zone had a value of 0.80 (0.76-0.82), Calgary Zone was 0.96 (0.92-1.00) and the rest of Alberta was 0.97 (0.93-1.01). The province is updating the R value on Mondays. This number shows whether cases are currently increasing, decreasing or staying the same (ie. the average number of people that someone infected with COVID-19 will infect). 

Reporting on COVID-19 numbers in schools will resume later this week as students started back in person today. 

In the City of Grande Prairie, 12 new cases were added, and four people recovered. The active total is 159 with 750 recoveries. 

In the County of Grande Prairie, three cases were added, and six people recovered. There’s now 41 active cases and 231 recoveries.
