The Grande Prairie Storm announced they hired Sam Waterfield as the team's new assistant coach.  

Waterfield is originally from Victoria and 28 years old. For the 1019-20 season, he was the assistant coach for the Coquitlam Express of the B.C. Hockey League. He helped the Express to a league's best record of 47-9-2 in the BCHL's regular season as well as a first round sweep of the Langley Rivermen before the playoffs were cut short. Waterfield was the head coach of the Saanich Braves of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League in the previous two seasons. 

"I am excited to come back to Northern Alberta and work in such a strong community," said Waterfield,  "The Storm have been a top team in the AJHL before and I look forward to being a part of bringing them back to a top contender.”  

Waterfield went to NAIT, where he played for the Ooks and with a Personal Fitness Training degree. He played for junior teams in Coquitlam, Nanaimo, Prince George and Winkler. He was also video coach for the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League. 

"The Storm are excited to have Sam join our team and look forward to seeing him at training camp this fall," said Storm Head Coach/General Manager Mike Vandekamp.
