As part of the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alberta government announced it would be doubling its capital maintenance and renewal (CMR) funding in 2020-2021.

Tracy Allard, MLA for Grande Prairie, says that this includes almost $2.5 million on two capital maintenance and renewal projects in Grande Prairie. These are a $2.3 million project to protect the Provincial Building from leakage, and $150 thousand to increase energy efficiency at the Courthouse.

Allard says, “By investing in CMR projects that can be actioned quickly, our government aims to keep companies operating and get more Albertans working.”

The downside of these investments is the debt that will be created.

“The unfortunate reality is this spending, while necessary at this unprecedented time, will cause the province to go further into debt. This increased debt will be a burden on future generations, making it crucial that we invest in projects that will also bring future returns and create a foundation for economic stability in the long-term. We have a responsibility to spend wisely so that debt service payments left for future generations will be offset by greater economic opportunity.”

Allard believes that in addition to these projects, the Highway 40 twinning is a wise choice for spending.

"By investing in this strategic economic corridor, the government is not only creating jobs, but also stimulating economic development and investment. I am proud to say that Grande Prairie continues to be the economic bright spot in Alberta. Attracting investment will not only serve to help grow the economy locally, but will also help grow the provincial and federal economies in a time where job creation is more critical than ever.”

“A strong economy means a strong Alberta. I know that these times have not been easy on anyone, whether it be financially, socially, or in terms of mental health, and I am hopeful that continued collaboration will bring more welcome good news. Thank you to residents across the Grande Prairie region for your continued vigilance as we move into relaunch. As public health restrictions lift, we must continue this commitment to ensure successful reopening and successive relaxation of restrictions.”
