On Sunday, April 21st, Slave Lake RCMP responded to a fast-spreading forest fire in Canyon Creek, prompting the closure of Highway 2 between Seppola Drive/RR 80 and Center Avenue.

Visibility along open sections of the highway was severely reduced due to smoke.

The fire is presently under control, spanning 3.0 hectares. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Since April 18th, a fire restriction has been in place for the Slave Lake Forest Area, suspending all fire permits and prohibiting campfires in random camping areas or backcountry.

Over the weekend, two tickets were issued for $600 each for violating the fire restriction. One person was burning without a fire permit and the other had a campfire in an undesignated area and failed to properly extinguish the campfire, leaving it smoldering.
