Early this morning (April 16) after 5 am, the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a report of a balcony fire at 9225 Lakeland Drive. Upon arrival there was smoke visible from a 4th floor balcony. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and limit the damage to the building.

The fire originated in a planter box on the balcony and the cause was determined to be smoker’s material. The Grande Prairie Fire Department would like to remind everyone not to extinguish or dispose of cigarettes in planter boxes. The peat moss in these boxes have been the cause of many fires over the years.
