Jasper National Park has extended the restriciton on wildlife view practices until Aug. 31. This was originally put in place on June 9.

There is currently a restriction in effect in Jasper National Park on viewing wildlife.

This means no one can come within 100 metres of any bear, cougar, or wolf, and 30 metres of any elk, moose, caribou, sheep, or goat except when completely inside a legally positioned motor vehicle

Any distance that displaces or interferes with the free, unimpeded movement of wildlife or creates or contributes to a potentially hazardous condition or situation is also not allowed. It also means people cannot stay within prescribed distances if they accidentally come within them.

These restrictions do not apply to a superintendent, park warden, peace officer, or any other person authorized.

This is in effect for all areas within 200 metres of any road, highway, or place within a park intended for use by the public for the passage or parking of vehicles.

These restrictions are in effect to reduce the likelihood of motor vehicle collisions, ensure visitor safety during wildlife viewing, protect wildlife from disturbance and stress, help Parks Canada staff safely manage dynamic wildlife viewing opportunities, reduce or prevent habituation of wildlife, and reduce the formation of large groups that could increase the spread of COVID-19 to staff and the public.
