Several tornadoes moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area on Sunday, carving a 15-mile path of destruction. But in the middle of it all stands a symbol of hope.

A total of nine tornadoes have now been confirmed in the string of storms that terrorized the region Sunday night.

"Our building may be broken, but our church is as whole & alive as it has ever been. To God be the glory!"

The Dallas Morning News reports that so far 104 buildings have been counted destroyed, with another 286 with major damage, and 344 with minor damage. Total damage estimates have already been pegged as high as $10 billion USD. That makes it the costliest weather event in Texas history.

Northway Church in Dallas was one of the buildings destroyed by the tornadoes. But pastor Shea Sumlin says the church is better than ever. And in the middle of the destroyed building, the church's cross remained untouched.

"As I sat today in the chaos of what used to be our worship center, I took comfort in the symbolic reminder that the cross of Jesus still stands," Sumlin writes in a Facebook post.

"The church is not a building, but a people who stand on the confession that Jesus is the Christ, and against which, not even the gates of hell (nor an EF3 Tornado!) will prevail! (Matthew 16)."

That church, Sumlin says, is far from destroyed. "Our building may be broken, but our church is as whole & alive as it has ever been. To God be the glory!"

In another update, online Sumlin says their building will eventually be ok thanks to insurance. But, he says, there are lots of others who won't be ask ok. Sumlin has rallied his church to serve others affected by the tornado. They have been helping people with clean up on their properties.

The church also hosted a community meal on Wednesday evening in their parking lot. "Joy and hope in the midst of sorrow," the church called the evening. "What an incredible night coming together to share a meal with our community! Thank you to everyone who rallied together to make this night happen for our neighbourhood!"

Northway and other churches are gathering Thursday evening for a community prayer service.
