An investigation into an outbreak of foodborne illness has led to a recall of frozen chicken nuggets.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) along with Sofina Foods Inc. is recalling Crisp & Delicious brand Chicken Breast Nuggets from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The chicken nuggets are uncooked and frozen. They were sold in 1.6 kg packages, and have a best before date on the package of 2019 JL 19. They have a UPC code of 0 69299 11703 5

If you have the affected product at home it should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase.

The CFIA says that there are currently 54 cases of illness in ten provinces linked to this outbreak, including 11 in Alberta.

"Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick," the CFIA says.

"Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis."

The CFIA says that it is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
