Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) has been working closely with Alberta Education on supporting student learning moving forward. Collaboration between Alberta Education and school divisions across the province will provide a coordinated, equitable plan for all students, teachers and staff. All attention has been focused on this issue, and an official timeline for continuing student learning will be announced in due course.

Parents may currently feel there are more questions than answers. PWPSD asks families for their patience during this unprecedented situation that is changing quickly, based on new emerging information.

Included in the Minister of Education’s announcement to cancel classes indefinitely was a commitment to send an open letter to all parents in the coming days.

In the meantime, PWPSD has provided the following key points to guide principals and teaching staff:

  • The Ministry of Education is working on a province-wide plan for staff and students.
  • This plan will take time. Alberta Education has indicated possibly as much as two weeks, but they cannot place an official end date on planning at this time.
  • Please be patient. We are dealing with an unprecedented situation.
  • We will provide regular updates as plans unfold.
  • To support social distancing, schools should stagger pick-up of personal items.
  • Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs): Cancelled for this year.
  • Diploma Exams: No final decision has been made at this time. The Ministry of Education will review with Advanced Education the practicalities for students registering in post-secondary education for the upcoming 2020-2021 academic year.
  • The Ministry of Education has asked that the work in school authorities continue as much as possible, including infrastructure and maintenance, in a safe manner that complies with the latest health advisory.
