Effective today, the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service has lifted the ban for off-highway vehicles. A fire ban is still in place.

“We’re in an unprecedented situation,” said County Fire Marshal Ken Atamanchuk. “County Fire Service must not only continue to monitor wildfire risk, but also assess the risks presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The actions we take are not only to prevent fires, but to reduce the possibility of another disaster that would put additional strain on fire and emergency resources during this COVID-19 pandemic.”

Atamanchuk reminds the public that even though the OHV ban as been lifted, offroaders have a role to play in keeping their communities safe.

“Remember to check for hot spots on your OHV and continue to practice social distancing out on the trails,” said Atamanchuk.

The fire ban for the County, the towns of Sexsmith, Beaverlodge, and Wembley and the Village of Hythe is still in place. All open fires are banned, with the exception of permitted permanent recreational fire pits.

No new fire permits will be issued in most cases. The County will consider new permits for permanent recreational fire pits on a case-by-case basis. Due to COVID-19 each request will consider the safety of our fire personnel and the criteria set out on the County’s web site. Permanent recreational fire pits permitted within the last two years will be granted automatic renewals.
