The County of Grande Prairie proudly announces the Hawkes-Johnson as the 2024 Farm Family of the Year. This hard-working family, rooted in multi-generational farming, has demonstrated exceptional dedication, hard work, and community spirit, earning them this esteemed award in its 56th year.

Sustaining their 250 cow operation, the Hawkes-Johnson Family recognized early on that sole reliance on their cow/calf operation wouldn't suffice. They have embraced collaboration, resilience, and a profound sense of community, embodying the essence of this prestigious recognition.

"We are humbled and grateful for this honour,” says Sherene Hawkes. “It's wonderful to be recognized and to show others the hard work and teamwork behind our family generational farm. Everyone says it takes a village to raise a family, but it also takes a family to run a farm. Without everyone's help and support, this way of life would not be possible."

Their journey is a testament to the collaborative efforts of both sets of parents, actively involved and instrumental in shaping the family farm. Darren's parents, Andy and Fran Johnson, and Sherene's parents, Terry and Joyce Tomshak, have played pivotal roles, contributing their expertise and unwavering support.

The Hawkes-Johnson Family has been devoted to community service through coaching junior hockey and volunteering at the Teepee Creek Stampede. Children Alyssa and Brody are equally involved in the community through Sexsmith Minor Hockey and the Alberta High School Rodeo, and as former Kleskun 4H Club members.

"The Hawkes-Johnson Family's recognition as the 2024 Farm Family of the Year underscores their steadfast commitment to agriculture and community,” says Councillor Bob Chrenek, Agricultural Services Board Chair. “Their dedication reflects the County's rich farming legacy. We commend their contributions and anticipate their ongoing excellence in agricultural production and community service."

The Hawkes-Johnson Family will be officially acknowledged at a banquet at the Peace Country Classic Agri-Show on March 8, 2024. Tickets are available for purchase by contacting the Agriculture department at 780-532-9727. The Farm Family Award is a tradition in the County dating back to 1969.
