At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30th, The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service Clairmont and Dunes Stations, RCMP, and AHS EMS were dispatched to a reported hydrochloric acid spill near 157 avenue and 89 street in Clairmont.

Upon arrival, it was noted that there was an obvious spill in an area of the yard. County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service Dangerous Goods Technicians secured the area and proceeded to use soda ash to neutralize the spilled acid. One person from the location was transported to the hospital after coming into contact with the acid during the spill.

Alberta Environment was also notified of the incident. There is no risk to the environment. The cause of the spill is under investigation.

Although dangerous goods incidents have a low frequency of occurrence, they are a high risk to the public and first responders. The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service is prepared to respond to dangerous goods events and spills with our fully equipped dangerous goods response trailer and on-shift Dangerous Goods Technicians. If a release of a regulated product occurs and is beyond the capabilities of those onsite to immediately remedy the issue, we strongly encourage you to call 911. Early intervention with proper equipment for dangerous goods incidents will reduce the possibility of harm to the public and the environment.
