The County will move forward with recreational use of stormwater ponds in residential subdivisions.

In winter 2021/2022, the County conducted a pilot project to oversee winter recreation on two approved stormwater ponds in the Whispering Ridge and Westlake Estates subdivisions.

“We saw many residents in the Whispering Ridge and Westlake Estates take advantage of the pond to enjoy outdoor winter recreation last season,” said Reeve Bob Marshall. “We are grateful for the time and care that community members invested in maintaining those ponds for recreation.”

The County will develop a program similar to the existing Neighbourhood Ice Surface Program where interested residents can apply to manage their local stormwater pond ice surface. Designated stormwater pond skating surfaces will be maintained by volunteers. The County will oversee the program and coordinate training for volunteers who apply.

“Safety is always our top priority, and we want to make sure this kind of activity on our stormwater ponds is as safe as possible,” added the Reeve. “We recognize these ponds provide a great opportunity for residents to get outdoors and stay active with their families and neighbours, which builds a strong sense of community.”
