Premier Kenney wrote a letter to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to express his support and the support of the Alberta government of Edmonton’s bid to host the remainder of the NHL season and the post-season.

He told the commissioner that Alberta is uniquely positioned in the pandemic because of our high testing levels, strong outbreak response plan, and world-class health infrastructure that is only at 5% capacity of COVID-19 spaces.

Kenney says he has been in close contact with the Oilers Entertainment Group make sure a proposal would have the appropriate health protocols in place. He also believes the NHL could play a key role in our relaunch strategy.

“Edmonton is a natural hockey city, with a world-class facility in the Rogers Place. Albertans are rabid hockey fans, and Edmontonians are no different. This city is a hock town, and folks across Alberta are hungry to see the resumption of the 2019-2020 NHL season that has been memorable for Flames and Oilers alike.”

In addition to the low active case numbers in Edmonton and the other advantages mentioned in responded to COVID-19, Rogers Place is also directly attached to a brand-new hotel with all the services needed included. The staff and players could be hosted in an insulated and protected environment.

Kenney says that he is hoping to speak to commissioner Gary Bettman again this week.
