Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health addressed concerns that arose from a weekend order on masks in schools at her Monday afternoon briefing.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says the order was meant to clarify the issue but instead muddied the waters.

"The order that was issued this weekend does not change our policy or my advice, reports that indicate otherwise are not accurate," she says. "No policy has changed since the mandatory mask policy was announced on August 4."

Students from grades four to 12 are required to wear masks in all common and shared areas, including hallways and on school buses.

The rule also applies to staff and teachers in all settings outside seated classroom instruction where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Dr. Hinshaw apologized for any confusion and says any new orders will only be released between Monday and Thursday, so that any issues that arise can be dealt with quickly.

But she stresses the order put out this past weekend was no different that what had been originally announced.
