All burning is suspended and a fire ban is in effect for the City of Grande Prairie effective Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 2pm.

No new open burning permits will be issued until conditions improve in the City and GP Forest Area.

Fire Ban includes the following:

  • All opening burning
  • Consumer fireworks
  • Backyard fire pits
  • Campground fire pits
  • Burn barrels/incinerators
  • Charcoal briquettes or other solid fuels
  • Turkey fryers
  • Tiki torches
  • Propane and natural gas fires (including fire pits)

The use of propane or natural gas stoves used for cooking is permitted.

If you are using recreational off-highway vehicles on private lands, please use extreme caution.

Ensure the vehicle is equipped with a spark arrestor.

During a fire ban, a number of factors can play a role in determining when a fire ban is declared, including:

  • levels of both recent and total precipitation;
  • what is the risk of a fire getting out of control;
  • relation between temperature, humidity and wind;
  • water restrictions or water bans;
  • Appropriate staffing and equipment due to other fires being fought within the region.

If conditions require, Grande Prairie Fire Department may declare a fire ban. Fire bans are communicated to residents through the newspaper, radio, road signs and City of Grande Prairie website. Other ways of communicating may include direct emails and other mediums.

Any person who ignites, fuels, supervises, maintains or permits an outdoor fire within the municipal boundaries of Grande Prairie during a fire ban can be fined. Should the fire get out of control and emergency fire response is required, the person responsible for the fire can be charged the full firefighting costs.
