The City of Grande Prairie is hosting Community Orchard Tours to show residents the benefits of having over 15 orchards in our community.

These tours will take place throughout the summer and fall of 2022. Each tour will have a different theme to teach residents about weeds, pollinators, fruit thinning, insect varieties, pruning, harvesting and more.

Parks staff and members of council will be on-site during each tour to help answer questions about the community orchards.

Upcoming tour dates and themes:

• June 22 - Highland Park (98a Street and 91a Avenue), Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Theme: Weeds and Pollinators

• July 13 - Mountview - Mike Fedyna Park (Behind Lutheran Church on 96 Street), Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Theme: Fruit thinning, veggies and insect varieties

• August 3 – Country Club (94 Street and 66 Avenue), Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Theme: Harvest

• September 7 – North Patterson - Dalen Park 76A Avenue and 98 Street, Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Theme: End of season

 

Background

The City of Grande Prairie’s first community orchards were planted in 2015, with more added in the following years. The community orchards aim to provide sustainable and accessible community food sources while enhancing neighbourhood parks.
