The City of Grande Prairie and County of Grande Prairie partnered in 2018 to update the aerial photo database.

The City and County use this data in many areas of operations including flood risk management, infrastructure management, ground surface drainage, and emergency services operations.

The City and County use aerial imagery to help with planning, construction, and land assessment functions. The imagery and datasets are also used in a wide variety of commercial and public applications such as infrastructure design projects and real estate appraisal.

High detail imagery at a resolution 10 centimeters was obtained for the City of Grande Prairie, for areas within the County, including the hamlets of Clairmont and Bezanson, and for the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley and the Village of Hythe. At this level of resolution the photographs provide enough detail to clearly see municipal infrastructure including roads, paved trails, light fixtures, culverts and manhole covers.

Aerial photos of the rural areas of the County were captured at a resolution of 25 centimeters, which is an improvement from similar projects in the past which captured imagery at 40 centimeter resolution. The lower number of centimeters of resolution results in a higher quality image.

The public can now view the imagery through the City’s Open Data Portal or gpMap Viewer, and the County’s Open Data Portal or Public Web Map.
