The province is making some changes to quarantine rules.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said in a conference on Thursday that immediately, fully vaccinated Albertans who received their last dose in the past two weeks will no longer have to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact of a COVID-19 case and are asymptomatic. But if a fully vaccinated individual is experiencing any symptoms, they will still be required to isolate and go for testing. If they test positive, they must follow the protocol and isolate for 10 days from when their symptoms started. If they then test negative, they would not be required to quarantine further.

People who have received only their first dose will have to quarantine for 10 days, down from the current 14-day period.

Those who have not received any doses of the COVID-19 vaccines will not have any changes to their quarantine requirements.

The new quarantine rules do not apply to travelers returning to Canada.

Hinshaw also clarified the rules around mask exemptions, explaining that individuals such as those who cannot put on their mask by themselves won’t require a doctor’s note as their exemption “remains valid.” She finished the conference by asking Albertans to follow the restrictions this May long weekend, adding this could be the "last long weekend" Albertans are asked to stay home.
