Alberta Health Services (AHS) has provided another update on the province's COVID-19 situation.

The number of confirmed cases in Alberta as of Monday (Mar. 23) is now up to 301, an increase of 42 from the previous update. So far, 18 are hospitalized with seven in the ICU.

There have been no additional deaths.

With about 3,000 cases being tested a day, the province is now making changes to their system. They are now focusing on groups at highest risk of local exposure and at-risk populations, including people hospitalized with respiratory illness, residents of continuing care and other similar facilities, people who returned from travelling abroad between Mar. 8-12 and health care workers with respiratory symptoms.

Starting this week, staff, physicians and contractors at clinic health care sites will be screened before starting their shift.

Anyone with symptoms who does not fit any of these categories, including recent travelers, will no longer be tested and instead are instructed to self-isolate.

"I can appreciate the comfort and certainty that testing can bring for those unsure of whether they have a minor bug or COVID-19. It is important to remember the majority of people who get COVID-19 will experience minor symptoms," said Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

The online self-assessment tool has been updated to reflect the change in testing for returning travelers.

"I do encourage people to go for walks and enjoy being outside. At the same time, it is extremely important to maintain that distance with others."

There are 1,432 confirmed cases so far in Canada. For more information on COVID-19, visit the COVID-19 Info page.
