Three football players attending the University of Virginia were shot and killed last week and Cece Winans shared a heartfelt message of hope at the funeral on Saturday.

On Sunday, November 13, a former football player and student of the University opened fire on campus. Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. shot and killed Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry. During the incident, two other young men were injured and remain in hospital.

The memorial service to celebrate the lives of the murdered students was held on Saturday, November 19. Winans, a 15-time Grammy award winner, shared a few heartfelt words before performing 'Goodness of God' and 'Believe for it.'

"I just want to give my condolences to all the families," said Winans during the funeral. "We know we serve a God who's able to take us through, and He's gonna take you through one day at a time."

Hoping to encourage listeners in light of eternity, Winans offered hope through salvation in Jesus.

"I pray that all of us would understand the beauty of life and that we would make the decision to accept Jesus as our Savior. So that whenever the time comes for us to leave here, young or old, that we're ready. Remember that God loves you, He's with you, and that He is good."

According to ESPN, the player's coach, Tony Elliott, also shared some words on stage, referencing his Christian faith.

"There's no doubt in my mind that I will see them again," says Elliott.

The coach is looking toward the future of the team and University while grieving this heavy loss.

"We have a mission going forward, and that mission requires a tremendous amount of responsibility. Amidst the pain and suffering, there is hope. Weeping is going to last for the night, but great joy is coming in the morning. Because of 1, 15, 41, we have the responsibility to rebuild this community and program on the legacy of their stars and do so in such a way as to bring light unto the world."
