The Cargill plant north of High River is going to be re-opened as of next Monday, May 4, with new safety measures in place.

The plant was closed when hundreds of workers fell ill with the coronavirus and one woman died.

At the Provincial government's update Wednesday, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said there were 821 cases of COVID-19 among workers at the plant.

She says additional measures will be implemented.

"Again, these measures were enchanced, so certain settings such as the locker room for example, there will be additional measures being put in place there and again, based on these on-site inspections and their assessement of the situation, my colleagues at Alberta Health Services have indicated that they feel these measures are sufficient to prevent the spread of infection."

Cargill says all employees who are eligible to return to work in its harvest department are asked to do so.

"We look forward to welcoming our employees back and are focused on our ongoing commitment to safety," Jon Nash, Cargill Protein's North American lead, said in a release.

They said returning employees should be healthy and should not have had contact with anyone who has had the COVID-19 virus for 14 days.

During Wednesday's provincial update, Dr. Hinshaw said 276 workers at the JBS plant near Brooks have tested positive.

That plant remains open.
