Blake Shelton had his first CMA win in five years with his song, "God's Country," and gives his girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, credit for bringing him back to God.

At the 53rd Country Music Awards (CMA) in November 2019, Shelton's song was named Single of the Year.

"God's Country" is featured on Shelton's Fully Loaded: God's Country, released Dec. 13, 2019.

The country artist and coach on The Voice dedicated his win to producer Busbee and Shelton's own country music hero earl thomas Conley who both recently passed away.

But the win was more than just an award to Shelton. Prior to hearing what was to become the CMA Single of the Year, Shelton was feeling as though his career in country music was losing traction, reports BCNN1.

The artist says he remembers asking himself during that time, "How am I going to feel when this goes away?"

Then came "God's Country," a song that brought faith back into a place of prominence in Shelton's life and became a mulit-week number 1 hit, his 26th song to sit at the top of the charts.

2019 marked a significant year for Shelton in terms of faith. In another song on his album, "Jesus Got A Tight Grip," Shelton and his co-writers Chase McGill, Jessi Alexander and Rhett Akins, speak of God's care for us and hold on our lives.

"Jesus got a tight grip on my soul and he ain’t letting go," one line reads.

The song continues, "The devil reaches out but he can’t grab hold because Jesus got a tight grip on my soul. Might have a little rust on my halo, but when I’m gone I know where I’ll go."

Shelton says the igniting force behind his commitment to faith came by way of the start of his relationship with Gwen Stefani. The start of their relationship was unilkely, says Shelton - the two were both dealing with difficult divorces at the time of meeting while on The Voice - but Stefani brought a connection to Christ that she and Shelton now share.

"I believe in God now more than I ever have in my life," Shelton says.

"The biggest part of that is just how (Gwen) came into my life and now our relationship. It’s just too weird. If you take God out of it, it doesn’t make sense. If you put God into it, everything that’s happened with us makes sense."

When they started dating in fall 2015, Stefani encouraged Shelton to attend church regularly. That was something Shelton called a turning point in his life.

Hearing "God's Country" was a revelation for Shelton this year, tying it all together. He and Stefani spend time at their two homes, one of which is a farm in Oklahoma. This is where Shelton was when he first heard his future hit.

"I was in a place that I consider to be God’s country doing the thing that makes me feel the most connected to God, which is working on the land," Shelton says.

"I heard that song, and I had one of those moments that you hear people talk about … where they say they pulled over on the side of the highway and listened."

As Shelton sings, "The devil went down to Georgia, but he didn't stick around. This is God's country."
