A Canadian Bible college is in mourning after a student suddenly passed away while on a mission trip.

Steinbach Bible College (SBC) in Steinbach, MB, says that student Philip Thiessen experienced a medical emergency while in Brazil.

SBC has issued the following statement:

"It is with a very heavy heart that SBC shares tragic news. On Wednesday afternoon, one of our students, Philip Thiessen, suddenly passed away while on a mission trip in Brazil due to a medical emergency. He had been feeling slightly ill before they left and during the first few days of the trip. He was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, where it was discovered that his appendix had ruptured."

The school asked in an online post that people would join them in praying for Thiessen's family, as well as students, faculty, and staff at the school.

"It is at times like this that we rely on strength and peace from our Heavenly Father. Thank you for your prayers," the school said in the post.

The 'SBC Pursuit' mission team left for Brazil on April 3.

SBC has set up a fund to help the college assist the family in covering costs associated with this tragedy. Individuals can contribute to a special project called Thiessen Family Support. Donations can be made online, by telephone (204-326-6451) or cheque.

SBC says it is grateful for prayers and support offered for the family and college.
