There's a weather alert in effect for B.C. Peace River, Highway 97 Pine Pass.

Poor visibility in heavy snow and local blowing snow Thursday and Thursday night.

Communities along Hwy 97 from Clinton to Pine Pass and surrounding areas will be affected, as well as communities near the western slopes of the Cariboo Mountains, and along Hwy 16 from McGregor to Fraser Lake; Mackenzie; and Fort St. James.

Total snowfall accumulation: 10 to 20 cm, with southeast wind gusts from 30 - 60 km/h.

A frontal system associated with an atmospheric river will produce heavy snowfall rates across the central interior beginning Thursday afternoon. Strong south to southeast winds of 30 km/h gusting to 60 will accompany the snow. Travellers are advised to check their travel plans and be prepared for poor visibility in heavy snow and/or blowing snow.

The snow will end Thursday overnight or early Friday morning as rising freezing levels cause precipitation to transition to rain.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
